Questions & Answers for PetSafe PetSafe 5-Meal Pet Feeder

Question

Can 2 separate units can be set to open at exactly the same time?

I have 2 cats, and am looking to purchase 2 identical automatic feeders to feed them in the evenings on days I am gone 16+ hours. However, I NEED the 2 feeders to be able to be set to open at EXACTLY the same time. I purchased another feeder with 2 compartments and turn dials to set the amount of hours until open, but they never opened at the same time. I want to be sure another product will actually and precisely do that before purchasing. Any info you can share would be much appreciated. Thanks.

It could be done. Would require some careful setting of the clocks originally. So they both read the exact same time. Probably best done with two people.

There is a clock timer setting and as long as the clocks are both set to the same time of day and you set the time to open at the same time both units should open together within a few seconds of each other.

You could run a test opening while you are home to verify they open together.

Yes, you can have two open at the same time. It's got a clock built in, so you set the clock, then set the exact times you'd like the compartments to open. So if you had two units, they'd open at the same time, although you should set the clocks on your two units simultaneously so that they're as close to the same second as possible.

Since this feeder has an electronic battery powered clock you should be able to do want you want to do. When programming the clocks on the two units I would set each one to exactly match the time as shown on your cellphone at the moment that you program the clock of each unit.

I have two cats and two of these feeders. I set one to open a minute or two after the other. I did this so the bossy cat would be busy eating when the second one opened. I have watched the cats when these open the bossy one goes first as I expected. The other cat sits by the feeder and waits. When the other one opens he mozys over to that feeder while Mr. bossy cat is still chomping on this food in the first feeder. So far this works.

Yes, it will turn even if you don't fill them (I know from experience -- zoops!)
Basicaly it will turn each time its internal clock trips one of the times you've preset. If you only set one time, it will only turn once a a day, if you set two times it will turn twice a day. So how many days it will "last" depends on how many preset times you've set up. It can last 5 days if you only set one time. If you set two times (say, 6am and 6pm) you can leave Friday night and it will turn twice on Sat and twice on Sunday and then it's done (and hopefully you're back home to refill it).

answer 5
Yes. I have the feeder set for 3 feedings during the day. That leaves one more tray open plus the one that is open. Once I forgot to refill the feeder for the 3 feedings but my husband had suggested I keep food in all 4 trays. This meant that instead of the cats getting nothing in the 4th tray, when that tray opened, they had food. So, if you time the feeder to feed your cat once a day but you fill all 5 trays, the feed will last 5 days.

I wouldn't use wet food in the feeder. It isn't designed to keep the food cold and it might spoil if left out too long. We only feed out cat dry food and it works out great.

No ice packs but it is pretty sealed tight. I would not use it for a weekly feeding program but if you had like four dry meals per day with one being soft you could be okay to put it in there. I just wouldn't leave a weeks worth of food sitting in the slots. Because for a week I would not think it'd keep it safe.

Yes, I need it to do the same thing. I clicked on the directions download and you can select multiple times for it to feed. So I don't see any reason why we can't do every 2 hours. It does not appear to be done by intervals but by actually selecting the times. Good luck to you, I have feeling our pets are getting the same eye surgery, based on your every 2 hours need.

answer 4
No, it doesn't work quite that way. There are 5 trays or slots. One slot is always open. Your can time the other 4 for whenever you determine. I have two cats so I bought two feeders. I know it is expensive, but it has been well worth it. I have one cat that does not like to share his food. I face one feeder with the slot at a 6 o'clock position and the other at a 3 o'clock position to keep the greedier cat from head butting the other cat out of his food bowl. The feeder is timed to turn the slot open about 2 minutes apart. I guess I could have done it at the same time but by the time the second feeder opens the greedy cat is busy eating and doesn't bug the other cat. I ordered two feeders because I didn't think one feeder would work with these two particular cats with one being greedy and the other being more aloof. So far I have had no complaints from the aloof cat so he must be getting enough food.

I think the measuring cup I have is one cup. I don't use that much though. There are 5 trays and one is always open. Before bed I fill the open tray with about eighth cup of dry food. The next tray I fill with 2T moist food and a little water; next tray, 3T dry food, next tray 2T moist food with water. The last tray isn't timed to open but I keep almost a cup of dry in that tray in case forget to fill the tray. This way there is always food available the next morning. I have cut down considerably on the amount of food I place in the trays because a lot was left in the trays. When I see empty trays I add a little more the next day. If a lot is left I change the opening times or cut down on the food.

I haven't seen any ants. I do spray for pests regularly. When I used moist food I did see gnats but not many to be a big problem. I wash the units each night and refill it for my cats. I don't fill the trays for more than the cats can eat - so no leftovers in the trays also means no food for ants. If I have breakfast early I leave the trays empty so when the machine turns I can add the moist food. But then when I started to give a little less food the gnats went away too. I used to leave dry food out in an open bowl all day and I never had ants either.

This is exactly why we purchased this product and it's worked very well. In fact, to make sure she's medicated at the same time each day, we've continued using this even when we're home. We wrap a soft kitty treat around her (very small) pill and put it in her food. She hasn't slept through a dose yet (we have it programmed to turn @ 6am and 5pm) so she's sure to come to the tray before it turns again. .

answer 3
This particular product is an automatic Waterer. Not a feeder. I mean, I'm sure it'd work as one, by removing the cap but it is in no way a power-run feeder/waterer.

Question

Does the tray turn clockwise or counterclockwise.

I just set the timer and am about to use it for the first time. I need to know which portion area to put the food in, since I will be using this for wet food in the middle of the night. The area to the left or the area to the right? If the tray turns clockwise, then I would put it in the area to the right. If it turns counterclockwise, I would put it in the area to the left.

Hi Lizzy,

Thank you for your purchase of the PetSafe 5 Meal Pet Feeder!

This is an excellent question. The tray for the PetSafe 5 Meal Pet Feeder rotates clockwise.

This means the food compartment which is open when the lid is down will move to the left at the next feeding time.

If you would like to double-check the rotation simply press the Manual Advance button on the feeder!

Our product experts are standing by to help should you have any further questions. To speak with us directly, please call PetSafe Customer Care at 1-800-732-2677. Our office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time and on Saturdays from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. Eastern.

Thank you again for your question!

As for me, the tray moves clockwise. I would mark the number on each tray so I won't get confused! (that's what I did and it helps alot!)

Can the 5-meal feeder be programmed for 5 days rather than 5 meals?

Yes. You program the feedings by time only. So if you only set one time, leave the rest blank, the feeder will only rotate to the next compartment at that exact time each day. Five compartments with one rotation per day will last five days.

No, only one opening per feeder. But I was so pleased with the feeder that I bought a second one, since my cats usually eat out of separate dishes at the same time. I found it well worth the additional purchase.
