Questions & Answers for Zoo Med Zoo Med Nocturnal Infrared Heat Lamp

Question

UVA/UVB from an infrared lamp?

I had to substitute an infrared lamp for heat for my Giant Day Gecko as the standard UVA/UVB lamps wouldn't bring the temperature up to the necessary level. Does infrared provide UVA/UVB? If not, can I add an additional low wattage bulb so my gecko gets some UVA/UVB?

Infrared (IR) ONLY supplies HEAT. It is on the opposite side of the spectrum from Ultraviolet (UV). Yes you can use an additional bulb for UV,
UVA and UVB are different WAVELENGHTHS of Ultraviolet. UVA is more like natural sunlight (More visible light output, stimulates vitamin D production,) While UVB produces LESS visible light (And is often called "Black" Light,) and enhances fluorescent colors. "Black" light is the light that causes scorpions to "Glow".

The infrared lamp does not provide UVA/UVB light. So yea, you should add a second lamp with the proper bulb.
