I take everything out of the cage and clean it once a week (in addition to spot-cleaning), but I also have two liners: when one gets dirty, I swap it out for the fresh one while I clean the old one. Seems to work alright for my baby corn snake.

It is better to have the repti carpet. Your animal won't be able to eat or swallow any parts of the carpet like they can do with sand. I have an adult leopard gecko and I put him on repti carpet until he grew up to become an adult. Now I have him on reptile sand. The choice is yours.

I would purchase one of the larger mats and piece it together in the tank. We got the 29.7 x 11.7 and it was a bit too small. But it worked fine for our gecko.
