The reason for the divider is to give your dog only room enough to stand, turn around and lay down... discouraging any messes. HOWEVER, as an experienced puppy-mom... I give mine a little more space... and put the front of the crate up on a 2x4 (laying down). Then when the little one tinkles, it runs under the divider, into the back of the crate where I put some newspaper to absorb any liquid. Keeps pup dry and cleanup is easy. Hint: Don't give pups blankets, or toys etc... that they can chew, swallow and you need to pay lots of money to have surgically removed. The divider is great and the purpose of the crate is to keep them safe. Blankets in or near the crate will get chewed or pulled into the crate. One of my pups pulled an entire queen sized blanket through the wire and shredded it :-(
