answer 1
My Boader Collie/Chocolate Lab is on Salmon Wilderness. I switched from the regular Blue Buffalo Salmon because the Wilderness is supposed to have more protein versus carbohydrates. Her energy level shot through the roof and her weight has gone down because she is more active and consumming less carbohydrates.

It sounds like your German Shepard is a little over weight. According to my Vet. they should not weigh over 80lbs. so I would guess a little weight loss is good for your dog. I suggest your ask your Vet. for sure though. ;)

Blue Buffalo Wilderness formula is primarily protein. Animals (and people) become lean when using mostly protein. Think about the Atkins diet for severely obese people. It is all protein all of the time so that the person can loose weight. Dogs are the same. If your dog is active he will require more Wilderness formula than other foods that include wheat, corn or soy. I would not and do not use anything but the Wilderness formula because dogs are carnivores and should not eat wheat, corn or soy. I should note that my older and less active dog actually requires about half of the Wilderness formula compared to other dog foods due to the high nutritional value of the food. One other thing you might try is using the salmon formula, if you are not already doing so, because the oil in the salmon will be burned for energy. I also add about 1 tsp of fish oil for every 25 pounds my dog weighs. The oil is essential for many things especially energy, brain health and coat.

I would go by the feeding guidelines on the bag. If you feel the amount of food is not sufficient for your GSD, you might try to add some wet food.
Some very active dogs do need more food.
Also, have you ruled out an underlying health condition?
Good luck to you and your shepherd.
