Can this light be used with a glass top, or should it be directly over the water?

It MUST be used with a glass or Plexiglas top. Never suspend this unit over open water, because it will cause mineral build-up on the LED lights. This unit is made to sit on the top of the hood, not to be extended over the open tank. The directions that come with it stress this.

answer 4
To answer your question directly, it can be used with a glass top. The glass won't stop any beneficial light.
When it comes to an aquarium, I always put a hood on my tank. The only aquatic animal that can't escape by jumping is a sea horse.
Anytime you have turbulence in water, there's a chance of splashing. If you choose to put this fixture above your tank without a hood, water will more than likely get onto the light. After enough cool water evaporates on a hot light, there's a chance of the light bulb cracking or shattering and getting glass in your aquarium.
Since LEDs burn much cooler, they wont shatter from cooler water, but the mineral deposits left from water evaporating will be enough to cause the light bulb to burn out prematurely or possibly break.

For accent lighting? Yes.

I have included a picture of mine lit with the Marineland LED Bubble Wand mounted inside the tank along the bottom of the back wall which I keep on day and night. My daytime lighting is a Marineland LED Aquarium Light sitting on the top of the tank.

You would have to modify the light to mount it on the side of the aquarium, but for what purposes it would serve, I have no idea.
Since hexagon tanks are barrel-shaped instead of casserole dish-shaped, the lighting has to be stronger to reach the bottom of the tank. if you want to have the light on the side to give everyone equal lighting, it'll work, but any fish will be blinded by the light since they don't have eye lids and plants will grow towards the light.
if you're thinking of laying the hexagon horizontally to accommodate the fish, then you'll have to mod the tank and the light so they would fit, and that's another question entirely.

Oh, I would think so. It gives off more light than a fluorescent light, but it also simulates the shimmering light of actual sunlight filtering down into a reef. The moonlight setting is also great, giving the coral the simulation of moonlight in the water while providing the natural dim light of night for them.
I think you'll really love this lighting system. I do!

Question

Compatibility with SeaClear bow front?

I'm waiting for my SeaClear bow front 46 to arrive, and in the course of my research, I found that nearly everyone replaces the awful light fixture that comes with it. I love this MarineLand light (have it on my current small tank), and I want to know how easy it is to use this light (largest size, with the legs/feet) on my new tank. I wouldn't want it just sitting on top with no cover, as light would be shining out everywhere. Or is that not an issue?

I would really be grateful if someone who's done this would get back to me with help/advice and PICS! Thank you in advance --

Coinsidently my tank is the exact same as yours. Get the one that has a maximum length of 36 inches (tank is exactly 36 inches). Extend the brackets (feet) to the max. Fits perfectly. Your new aquarium has an all glass top. Seems to be designed for an all glass. Love your grand new light!

You have no doubt already resolved the issue by this point, but I have the 36g seaclear bowfront aquarium and I too replaced light fixture with the Marineland LED. It is an easy swap out. The original fixture has a sturdy plastic cover which the LED fixture sits in (legs and all) keeping it protected from moisture. The cover and light fixture fit into a bar opening which is also the opening for adding decor, etc. and doing water changes.

I have this size. The actual unit is 24.5" long, but the footings it sits on are adjustable, and it provides plenty of light. You center it on the Plexiglas of your hood and extend the footings on either side to fit your tank's length. It is a marvelous product, and it looks very sleek on top of your aquarium hood. You can ditch the bulky fitting for the fluorescent bulb; it's not needed here. You'll love this product!

22.5", but 24" min with the unit, it's cord attachment, the light control on/off switch and the clasps on the ends. I use this size with excellent results for both my 36g and 46g bowfront aquariums. You can adjust the clasps to snugly fit within or hug outside of the splash guard. It is 1.75" high with clasps and 1" high without. I haven't tried to actually remove the clasps, so don't know if they come out all the way or just to the 36" dimension. If setting directly/flush on tank top and having clasps overhang the sides of the aquarium it would set at 1" high.

You use the hood with the Plexiglas area, but there is no need for the fixture for the fluorescent bulb, since this sleek unit sits right on top of your hood and is self-contained. I'm not sure what you mean by canopy, but I hope this answers your question.

Not a traditional wooden canopy, but you can use the glass covers and that should do just fine. I use them on my tanks and they help with evaporation greatly. They are called Marineland Perfecto Glass Canopy.

I would go with the Marineland LED system. The light is wonderful, and it gives a realistic sunlight effect in the water and also simulates moonlight on the evening setting. I will never go back to fluorescent lights again, and I highly recommend this product.

That all depends on what type of set up you are trying to achieve.

If you are looking at a planted aquarium I would use a strip light with a minimum of a 6,700K, higher is better I have always used at least 10,000K when using live plants .

If you are looking to have a fish only aquarium you could use a bulb with a lower kelvin rating or you could do LED lighting. Always buy one large enough to cover the top of the tank or you will have dark spots.

If lighting for the night I am using 2 Marineland Blue LED Bubble Wand for a 48" long tank and it works well for me.

I am not an expert, but I have this system and it doesn't go from sunlight to moonlight directly. There is a completely "off" setting between the two, so I don't think a timer could work with this system. It's a triple setting. I'm not an expert in timers. I only know of the ones we use for our Christmas lights, which go from "on" to "off" only. You can look further, but I don't know if they make timers that will handle a triple-switch setting like this system has.

Absolutely. The LED lights are brighter than fluorescent bulbs, yet provide a shimmering effect as it reflects fish swimming and bubbles rising to simulate normal sunlight filtering into shallow water. The moonlight setting is great too, simulating moonlight filtering in while giving your fish the period of dim light they need once a day. This is a wonderful product; just be sure to get the size you need for your tank.
