Thanks for your question. For safety reasons, none of our gates are designed to be left open. Closed and latched is recommended for maximum safety.

I don't think so but cats are very resourceful.
The bars are another reason I wanted to buy this,
our dog would have nothing to use for leverage
to climb over.

No, it's not. It's steel and will eventually rust outdoors. Check out the Cardinal Gates Outdoor Gate for an ideal solution outside! It's aluminum with stainless steel hardware.

It is wall-mounted and includes all hardware needed for installation. Essentially, it screws into the wall (or wherever you're mounting it) in two places on each side of the gate. One side is the hinge side; the other is the latch side. View the installation points here:

Doubtful a medium cat could fit through but I know both my cats could jump over the gates easily. The bars on my Cardinal Pressure Gate have 2" between them.
