This product does not include a lid or heater, but Fluval does sell both separately. As I own both. You may want to check local Petco stores for inventory or online.Betta fish thrive in water between 75 and 80 degrees, you must look at the specifications on the heater you purchase to determine if it is capable of maintaining a 5 gallon tank at this temperature.

I read that it doesn't have a lid. for one bettafish i love the 2 or 3 gallon petco hex tank. A good temp range for a betta is 76-86F so if you need a heater to keep it that warm i would recommend getting a heater recommended for the size tank you wind up with.

DO NOT READ THE PREVIOUS TWO ANSWERS.

THERE IS NO LID

A few people have mentioned problems with fish jumping out but I have not experienced that with my two goldfish. I've had the tank for six months, bought the small Fluval heater to go with it, keep the tank at about 74-76 (compared to 70-73 without a heater). It should be warm enough for a beta, if you're worried, the heater was inexpensive and works.

it doesn't have a lid and unfortunately many of my fish have jumped out and a few have died, I think it should be safe enough for bettas. Just keep the water level between the maximum and minimum lines.

PLEASE do not give advice on animals when you have no idea what you are talking about. :(
5 gallons is hardly enough space for a betta, let alone goldfish.
unless you want to torture your pet and have it die soon, do not put goldfish in anything under 20 gallons for a SINGLE fish.
do your research before you buy a pet! (:

I prefer the slower swimming fantail goldfish. Only one in this 5 gallon tank as goldfish are dirty and you will need to clean the water once a week with one goldfish. One betta would be fine as well.

DO NOT put a goldfish in this tank. I had a Black Moore and he died within the week even with ammonia maintenance and water changes. These fish are too incredibly dirty for this tank. Also, the water flow from the filter seemed to cause my little guy some distress when swimming. Though I really do enjoy Black Moore and Calico Ryunkin goldfish, I had to come to terms with the limitations of a 5 gallon tank.

I now have 3 Mollies and they seem to thoroughly enjoy their tank.

Good Luck & happy fish keeping!

Please don't add a goldfish - they get huge (I've seen some that were about 8 inches) and they're so messy they can get poisoned by their own waste in such a small space. They need at least 20 gallons + 10 for every extra fish & even this is on the low end. In some countries keeping them in something this small is actually against animal cruelty laws. You could get a betta or a group of small fish like rasboras. You can use a site called aqadvisor to calculate a rough estimate of the number & type of fish you can keep or google 5 gallon tank stocking (was this tank 5 gallons? If less, I wouldn't keep anything more than a betta & even that would prefer 5+).

It could be but you would not be able to put much in. maybe like one clownfish or a small goby. And you would need a better filter for some fish and corals. Also if you plan on getting corals you would need a better lighting. If this is your first saltwater tank, i would not recommend it because smaller tanks are hard to take care of, you are safer with a larger aquarium. Hope this helps :)

No, I believe salt water tanks need to have specific currents for the fish and this pump quietly pushes the water from the top of the square "chi" in the middle over the edges into the tank water directly.

With a new tank you want to do 25% water changes every week or so. Goldfish are messy fish. That could be the problem or it could be because you are over feeding. You can try snails or get a better filter. Also you would need a bigger tank because goldfish can get larger than 6", i have some that are almost a foot long in a 100g. Hope this comment helps :)

You don't have to use it but it makes changing your filter easier. If you put your river rock in the clear plastic tray you can simply remove it, then rotate the filter to change the pads. If you don't mind removing the rocks from the top of the filter each time to change the filter pad then you can just put them on top of the filter and skip the tray.

I had a different type of loach eel years ago, and he liked to slither up the sides of the tank sometimes. I would be really worried about them escaping since it doesn't come with a cover and you have to maintain a very high water level for the pump to function. You might be able to buy a cover online somewhere, but that might take away from the ambience.
