The opening flaps on the Hagen CatIt Hooded Cat Litter Boxes are definitely removable. I bought 3 of these litter boxes (2Jumbos and 1 X-Large) and had no problem removing the flaps.

Question

Are these boxes for use with clay sand or clumping sand?

Forgive me for being dumber than a stump, but as I'm reading the questions, I have the sense these boxes are for clay sand. Is that correct? I certainly hate to be in a rush, but my husband and I have brought in two more strays, which means time add another box. Thank you

This box can be used with either type. I use clumping. With the lid on, I have less problem with clay kick out. Also, makes possible for 2 cats to use side by side boxes without conflict because they don't see each other. Open boxes could lead to territorial issues. While it is supposed to be easy to clean with the lid on, I find it easier to remove the llid for easy access to all parts of the box while scooping. Scoop daily and add more fresh litter.. Doesn't even take that thick a layer to work.

You're not dumb as a stump, it's a good question. I use the Petco brand clumping litter. Since the bottom is essentially a rectangular tub, I think you could use any litter. I hope this helps.

I use JUMBO drawstring liners, but keep this in mind: if you lock the lid, it will punch small holes in the liner and being a jumbo litter box, you will be using a lot of litter. Don't expect to be able to lift a full bag of litter with those drawstrings unless maybe you are using the lightweight stuff. (Even with that, use caution...I had one mess bag break incident - litter everywhere!)

Yes, you can use liners with this litter box. I purchased "jumbo" sized liners and they work perfectly with the jumbo size litter box. I think they would work well with the smaller size too.

The bottom lip opening is 7" above the ground. I see my cats standing with front feet inside and back feet outside before hopping in, so it's not too terribly high for a cat to get inside. We don't keep the flap hanging in front (it folds back nicely) because one of our cats is not smart enough to figure out swinging doors. LOL - gotta love 'em. Hope it works for you.

Question

Does anyone make a large covered cat litter box with internal L.E.D. lighting?

First off, I have two very large cats and need larger litter covered litter boxes for them. We will only use covered litter boxes, but herein lies the dilemma with them. No internal lighting inside them.

I have a cat that is older and seems to have vision issues and likes to have things illuminated when he goes into the cat box to do his business.

But getting up when he starts cat meowing to say "get up and turn on the light so I can see to use the potty" is not only annoying to me, but my wife if I have to turn on the bathroom light for him.

So I'm hoping that there may be a cat litter box or some type of motion actived L.E.D. light I could either install in the cat litter box, or preferrably one that has one built in.

Even if it stayed on permanently would be okay, as then it would also help to light up the inside of the box, and having two cats, would also help improve keeping the litter boxes clean because you could see at a glance that the litter box was in need of cleaning. So a light would help two-fold in my caae, help us to know when it's time to clean the box, if we forget and we do sometimes, and also help our older cat to see what he's doing inside.

Cat litter boxes are nice, but they are just too dark inside without some type of light, especially since we use "covered" litter boxes, so any covered litter box would be really improved by adding some type of small internal L.E.D. low power internal lifghting to it.

And since I have vision issues myself, this would be a definite plus for me and well worth any added expense to have such a feature in my covered cat litter boxes.

This litter box has a clear swinging door. I believe a book light could be attached by a clamp to the side of the litter box. Another idea is to use a small lantern or desk lamp to shine light into the box.

Not sure if you are still looking for a solution but try finding a motion activated path light/night light that is available at Lowes. The exact product's name is SYLVANIA Motion Sensor Night Light. It operates on 3 AAA batteries and can be taped to any surface. It has LED bulbs. I can confirm a cat will activate it as I have one in my hallway and my cat loves to run in front of it at night to turn it on. Hope this helps.

Yes, the door flap containing the filter and swinging door can be removed and replaced. You are also able to leave the door flap on and just remove the swinging door. The door flap is connected to the hood of the box with a plastic connector that inserts into the main hood top.

I don't believe the disposable litter pan has a hood. Personally, I prefer the open litter box. No one has ever come into my home and smelled the cats (I have two). I also find open boxes easier to clean, which I sometimes have to do twice a day. My cats will only use one box.

that's the little bit on the lid (the bottom of the entry door) that you can hook a little trash bag to so litter doesn't get everywhere when you're cleaning out the litter box. This only works if you just raise the door to clean...if you remove the lid to clean the litter box, it's on the lid so it won't help that way.
