No! I would definitely NOT recommend this pad for outdoor use. This is a very thin pad with a near-velvety soft top and a rubber, non-slip backing. While the backing would most likely hold up, the top would be mildew-laden within a day or two.

I would not put it outside because of the material being so soft and plus. In my opinion it would be good for only inside use.

Yes, the largest size will fit your 42" x 28" crate. The K&H Self Warming Crate Pads have a special design with slits in each corner that allow the pad to fit in smaller crates. The slits in the large allow adjustment of about 3" per side, meaning it will fit in crates as small as 42" x 26".
