Questions & Answers for Wellness Wellness Sliced Cuts Adult Canned Cat Food

Question

Why do they put flax seed in this food when cats cannot digest flax?

If the reason is to add bulk or fiber then I suppose there is a reason for adding flax seed. Adding flax seed does not raise the available omega 3/6 fatty acids for cats.

It is true that cats cannot digest whole flaxseed, like you would use in birdseed. Most animals (cats, dogs and humans included) are able to much more easily absorb nutrients from ground flaxseed because whole flaxseed can easily pass though the digestive track undigested. To my understanding ground flaxseed and flaxseed oil are wonderful sources of omega fatty acids for cats and ground flaxseed is one of the ingredients in the food that I feed. For an older cat with kidney problems I supplement the food with purified fish oil capsules.
