I recommend not using sand with turtles, they are just fine with bare bottom tanks. With the basking area, it does seem like a good idea but your turtle will most likely track it into the water, making it cloudy.

I bought this for my freshwater (5 gallon) tank, and it is very bright. All the waste your fish leave behin shows up quite well. Its not like the sand in a sand box,it is like tiny little pebbles. So if you want fine sand, then Id find a different type.

i bought a syphon from Petco,I forget exactly which one,but the reviews have said that it sucks in too much water if you leave it in one place. What I do is I carefully go as close to the surface of the sand without touching it and try and get all the stuff left behind from my fish and snail. Sometimes it sucks in alittle sand, and if it does you can just scoop it out of the bucket (if your letting all the dirty water iinto a bucket) and then rinse it under water and put it back into the tank.
Good Luck!
