Yes, you can! It will require drilling into the posts but it can be done. As long as the material is dense enough, it should hold. Standard wood screws should work.

Question

I need to span a space that's 68 inches wide. Can I put 2 of these gates up and be able to connect them?

Ideally I would mount each to the outer sides and then be able to keep the gates closed. Would this be possible?

Thanks for your question. Because of the way the latch mechanism works, it is not possible to connect 2 gates. You can, however, add width extensions to this gate. Each extension is fixed-width and each is sold separately.
The gate width is adjustable from 27" to 42.5". There are 2 width extensions available: 10.5" (Search #1455729 on PETCO.com) and 21.75" (Search #1455753 on PETCO.com).
So, if you set the gate width to 35.75" then add one 21.75" extension and one 10.5" extension, you will span 68 inches.
NOTE: The entire span will open and close. Contact us for special accessories that can make the extension stationary so only the gate portion opens/closes.
