I bought the Aqueon 10w mini heater and installed it in my baby biorb two days ago. The tank has been at a steady 79 deg F with a room temp of 73-74. I will say any heater installed in this tank is quite an eyesore, possibly hidden with a fake plant.

Moderate lighting. The default lights aren't enough to keep live plants going that aren't planted directly beneath the light, but you can definitely keep some live plants if adequate spacing is allowed.

You'll need a filter if you haven't already, and yes, you can use live plants. AC70 (AquaClear70) would be nice to have, even if you have only one fish. With plants, you should be able to grow whatever you want as long as they don't require too much lighting.

There is a valve that allows you to place the pump below the level of the filter without water flowing back into the pump. It is very cheap and certainly worth not having to worry about the positioning of the pump. I'm not sure about live plants, but in this case the plants they sell there may be better to show off the lighting effects.

Question

Do I have to buy 3 different filter packs for the same filter each month? (carbon filter, foam filter, algae filter)

I love the tank but I'm calculating the costs before buying this product. I don't want to spend a lot on 3 separate filters each month.

Question

How do I prepare the tank for fish, and what to put in?

How long should I run the tank before putting in live plants and fish? Also, is there any fish someone would recommend for a betta tank. I want this tank for my betta, and would like to put some peaceful community fish in there, to make it look less empty (my betta boyfriend is a little smallish). Any suggestions?

Now keep in mind, I have a bigger tank (20H) and I have one male betta, some guppies, neons, and Mickies in mine. They seem to get a long. With Betta fish, it depends on that fish. Some don't mind what you put them with as long as they have room, some hate anything with a tail like them, some just hate everything including rock and plants. Both guppy and neon are school fish, so you need at least 2. If you have the 6 gal., try 2 neon. If you have the 12 gal. try 4 neon. Keep them in the plastic bag (suppose to anyways) and if he freaks out and tries to kill the bag, he may not want anyone else in his big new tank. Good luck!

The decorative hood on the top of the kit will not allow you to attach an automatic feeder. If you were to remove the hood, you will have very limited space to attach one, so it is not recommended

The filter provided with the Fluval Edge provides surface water agitation needed to aerate the tank for the fish. If you prefer to add an air pump with an air stone, you may do so, however you will have to be careful not to place the air stone where the intake of the filter can suck in any of the air bubbles.

We do not recommend that sand be used as a substrate in this aquarium. It can get sucked up into the filter motor and cause premature damage to the impeller.
