I just received my 406, and it came with everything I needed to get it setup and running right out of the box. Specifically, the unit included the hoses, intake components, return components, and all required media.

The only issue I had with my unit was the instruction manual. This is my first Fluval canister filter, and I was not familiar with how to operate Fluval's aqua-stop valve. I did a bit of googling to learn how to operate the thing properly because the instructions were not clear on the specifics. Despite that one issue (arguably due, in-part, to my inexperience with the product line), the installation was simple.

You can adjust the water flow with the top grey lever on the AquaStop valve. The instructions reccommend not moving the lever more than half way.

The bubbles are normal. If you take a scraper make sure you use the correct one for glass or acrylic. It has a long handle with a sponge attached to it. Just use this to go over the glass and the bubbles will disperse and should not come back.

answer 4
I don't think air bubbles will be a problem. The media itself that comes with the Fluval probably has air trapped inside of it's tiny crevices. The water needs to be circulated through air anyway to add oxygen to your water.
The bubbles will, most likely, disappear eventually.

answer 1
1) unplug the filter
2) flip up the grey lever between the 2 hoses at the filter (this shuts off the flow)
3) flip up the big red lever to disconnect the hoses (you may get a little water spillage here, so have a small towel handy)
4) move the filter assembly into a bathtub or large sink (before trying to open it)
5) fill a bucket with water from the tank (keeps the micro organisms)
6) open the filter (may be tight, so steady constant pressure) and remove the filtration media
7) place the filtration media in the bucket of tank water (it's ok, you will clean it in there). Keep all media inside each container for right now.
8) carefully open the top media tray (the only one with a lid) and remove the carbon bags and polishing pads. rinse them gently in the bucket of tank water, and then set aside (you can put them back in their container and set it aside)
9) carefully shake the middle media tray in the bucket of water. This tray should contain your bio-balls or equivalent. DO NOT rinse with fresh water or you will kill the bacteria. Simply shake the container (with the media still in it) gently from side to side inside the bucket and you will see the debris wash itself out. Set the tray aside
10) rinse the 3rd media tray (should have your big black bio-sponges). Remove the sponges and clean in the bucket of tank water (which should look quite dirty by now). Put the sponges back into the tray and set aside
11) There should be 4 white(ish) foam pads in a red holder remaining to clean. Remove the pads and clean in the bucket. Put back in the holder and set aside
12) use fresh water to clean the pump and pump housing. Be careful of small parts, and make sure to remove any debris from the impeller.
14) reassemble the filter components, but DO NOT add any water to the filter.
15) put the filter canister back into its place and reattach the hoses (after putting the hoses in place push down the red lever to lock them in place)
16) pull down the grey lever to restart the water flow. As long as the suction was not interrupted the pump will now refill itself.
17) after the pump refills, plug it back in
18) add water back into he tank (the equivalent of what you removed to fill up the bucket)
19) your done!

Question

Size of filter

I have a 20 gallon tank, and was thinking of getting the Fluval for aquariums up to 40 gallons. I thought it would keep the tank extra clean & If i upgraded my tank later, i would already have a good filter. My question is, can I put this filter on a 20 gallon? Would it hurt?

I have the 306 on my 20 gallon and have a res turtle. I guess it depends on what you have in the tank. I thought the same thing on the 40 gallon but turtles are messy so I went with the 306. it keeps the tank crystal clear.

It comes with all the filter media for each of the 4 containers inside the filter. It also comes with all long hose which you can cut to adjust the intake/outlet tubing, connectors including suction cups. So you do not need anything for the filter when you are setting it up.
