When we purchased this, we took it apart to wash it before we used it. When we did, we found that the filter is held in by a little black clip. The clip is easily unsnapped by bending it slightly so that the two tabs on the ends pop out of the two slots. This frees up the filter. If you remove the filter from the unit, you will notice that it's covered with plastic wrap much the same way a new CD is wrapped in plastic. This is to keep the filter's activated carbon factory-fresh until you take it home. BUT WATER WON'T FLOW THROUGH THE PLASTIC WRAP. Carefully remove the plastic (CAUTION: don't cut or tear the filter!) and replace the filter in the unit. It only goes in one way, flat side up. Replace the black clip into its two slots. Once you fill the reservoir with water and have reassembled the filter unit, screw the black filter unit onto the reservoir. Now place the blue base on top of the filter/reservoir (keeping the reservoir on the counter so it won't spill). Once the whole thing is reassembled, flip it over right-side-up and place it where you want it for your pet. It took us all of five minutes.

Mine doesn't flow either - when I looked at the "pictogram" in tiny font on the bottom part of the waterer- it shows what appears to be a support that prevents the filter part of the bottle from touching the bottom bowl which will allow water to flow out at it is drunk by dogs. The reason that water doesn't flow out is that the filter is actually touching the bottom of the bowl. Apparently the waterer that I bought was missing this important piece of plastic and now that it's been in use for a few weeks, I can't take it back :(

There are two models. One is for water, and one for dry food. The one for food has a plastic lid you can pull off to refill it. (The label on the food model shows food in the dish.) The one for water does not have a removable lid, to prevent leaks. When you refill it, you need to take the unit to the sink, take it apart, and make sure to wash out the reservoir when you refill it so the reservoir doesn't grow algae or mold or something else equally ugly. Your pet will thank you for that. More to the point, the unit only works because there is no hole on top. If there were a hole, the self-watering feature would not work. The entire reservoir would empty into the bowl and onto your floor because there would be no vacuum in the reservoir to stop the water flow. You can try this yourself with a 2 liter soda bottle and a cereal bowl. Fill the bottle with water and place it upside down in the bowl, about 1/2 inch from the bottom. The bottle should fill the bowl up to the level of the neck of the bottle and stop. Now, move your experiment into the sink. While keeping the neck of the bottle in the bowl, take a punch or knife and punch a small hole in the bottom of the bottle. You should see the entire bottle empty into the bowl, which of course will overflow into the sink. The same principle works with this automatic pet watering system, but only because there is no hole in the bottom (or top, as it sits on the floor) of the water reservoir. As your pet drinks the water and the water level goes down, more water will fill the bowl until the water level is again even with the level of the water supply.

No, the unit is removed from the base, then the black cap is removed to fill the bottle.Once the bottle is filled, the black cap is replaced and then the base. The unit is then flipped over. Some water may spill during this process so it is best done outside or over a sink.

I have one and it is awful. We have to tilt it to get the water to fill beyond an inch or 2. The money is not worth the hassle. But basically--fill it, put black cap on (make sure carbon filter is out of plastic wrap and put black strap over filter to hold it in. tip it over, screw it in, and watch the bowl fill less that halfway. Petco associates didn't say that it was missing a piece, but I asked if it needed something to let the water flow in better--they knew nothing, as usual. We prop folded up towels under ours so it tilts forward and stay full. But then, if it gets kicked or jostled--water everywhere. Seems there should be a happy medium for almost $40. Plus--no filters available. We have a big bowl we use and stuck this one in our rec room for extra use. Be glad you got it free! The sticker with 4 pictures on the bottom of the dish (if still there) is about as close to instructions as you get--and they say just what I wrote. No more, no less.
