A hamster would almost certainly chew the fabric of the pit to pieces if given the chance. While they do like to burrow around, I suspect they wouldn't like to do so in a pile of slick, plastic balls and may find it distressing. My sugar gliders love a ball pit, but they play very differently than hammies and have opposable thumbs - the point of their ball pit is to dig around for the toys and treat chests buried in it.
That said, I never offered a ball pit to any of my hamsters when I had them... and even animals of the same species have different preferences when it comes to toys (for example, a very adventurous/outgoing hamster might like something that a timid one shys away from).
If you wanted to give the ball pit idea a try, my suggestion would be to purchase some ping-pong balls and put them in a cardboard box with one or more doorways cut in it. That way, the balls would be smaller and the container could be replaced easily after it got chewed on, peed on, etc.
