Ideally a diabetic dog needs to be on a prescription diet available from most vets that is specifically formulated for diabetic animals. These foods have very specific ratios of fiber, certain kinds of protein, and carbohydrates to help the dog maintain a healthy blood sugar level and support their kidney function as filtering excess sugar from the blood over long periods of time can be hard on their kidneys. These specific ratios are not available in over the counter dog foods.
