The short answer is no, two tanks of the same size will not fit on this stand. However, I bought the 29 (or 20 long) gallon version of this stand, and I currently have a 29 gallon tank on the top, with a 15 gallon on the bottom "stand." The horizontal space on the bottom is about 4 inches shorter, so it can't hold another 29 gallon on the bottom, but the depth, or width, is the same. And since a 29 gallon and a 15 gallon (or a 20 high) are both 12" deep, it will fit. I can't say about the 40 gallon, but a 29 or 20 long on the top will fit with a 15 or 20 high on the bottom.

Hi there! I just purchased this for two beardies and you definitely cannot put another tank on the lower level, unfortunately. There just isn't enough space within which to squeeze another tank.

No. The top is designed to hold the 40 breeder tank. The legs then go downward taking away the 36 inch length. You have to minus the thickness of the legs which will leave about 31 1/4 inches. You can go to the store and measure yourself if the 40 stand is different, but I have a 55 gallon stand and the leg width is 2 1/4". You may have enough room for a 20 long or a 29 high but it will be a tight squeeze.
