answer 2
You still need to get an aerator for your tank. Something that blows bubbles. They make shells and other attractive things you can attach the airline to and they make the tank look really good.

Question

Petco Power Filter 50

I just bought a new filter and the pump is pretty loud. I filled the aquarium as far as I can with water, but the pump is so loud that it is easily heard over the television and from across the room. Is there something wrong with the pump? It works great, but is just too loud and I thought it was supposed to be silent like most other filters.

For a rattling noise, check to see if the impeller is inserted and spinning properly, for a humming noise, maybe the filter cartridge isn't sitting inside properly, making the lid rattle. The filter should be quiet, or exchange it if you can't find the cause of the noise.

Make sure you leave at least an inch without water at the top of the tank. This filter is a bit louder than some, but it does a superior job of keeping the tank spotless. Move the TV?

For baby fish, you can place a piece of a clean sponge or foam over the intake (or even nylon pantyhose with a rubber band) so that your babies won't go up the intake tube. I use a breeder net that sits inside the tank but keeps the babies safe from the other fish eating them up, until they grow large enough to release them into the community. I use a small turkey baster to remove the waste inside the breeder net.

answer 2
You should get a sponge filter or move the babies to a different tank if you're planning to raise them since the parents or other fish will likely eat them.

Take extra care in ordering filter sizes. I ordered the one that was supposed to fit 30 and it didn't. Call and talk directly to someone.

Question

Can you turn this thing down?

I bought the smallest size which said it was good for a 10 gallon tank but I cannot find a way to turn down the output. I have tried stuffing imitation plants in the area right before the slide but they will not stay in place because of the current. My fish are hiding in the cave and do not even want to come out to eat because it blows them all over the place. I know this as I have seen it. I have wound up turning it off most of the time and that was not the purpose of buying a filter. Thanks for any help you can give. - Cheri

I had the same issue on a small beta tank, so I just took a small clear plastic cup and taped it to the filter with painters tape so the outflow of water flows into the cup first, then slowly comes out. That way the filter is just as efficient, yet the current is slowed down. The fish are happy and so am I !!
