Question

Correct dosage for borderline weight?

Our dog is a Husky/Samoyed mix that is 60 lbs and we have used the dosage for up to 55 lbs. He still scratches (although no fleas are seen) and he picks up ticks when we go hiking but we're afraid of overdosage if we go to the next size up. Should we switch to the stronger dosage for higher weight dogs or switch to a different product?

Choose the next size up. The 55 pound mark is the absolute maximum that it will work at all for a dog. The lower number is what size dog it is MOST effective for, but not lethal to. My dog weighs 23 pounds. I use the "21 to 55 lb" size. I always use the entire tube. He hasn't had any ill side effects and is always flea and tick free. Your dog isn't getting nearly enough product without you upping the dosage. He shouldn't be getting ticks at all; that shows that it isn't truly working at this point.

Question

Can I use Advantage II for dogs on my cats?

Years ago my vet told me it was okay to use Advantage for dogs on my cats and I would buy the largest dog size vials, put them into syringes to drip onto my cats necks. I've always done this and now the site says not to use the dog stuff on cats. Why is this? Is it just to keep us from buying the larger product and downsizing it accordingly? I can't afford to buy lots, although we are now down to only two cats, plus our son has two cats and a dog.

personally products change over time to better the quality is my opinion and it is possible ingredients within have change, plus cats and dogs have different hormones.... So, when it states not to put on the cat the dog's medicine there is a good reason. Stick with what is recommended for the kitty's. They have lots of sales and coupons on line, sign up and save for your cats. Best to your felines.

usually it's about 30 day intervals... and switching over to the other product shouldn't make a difference. You should find which product works best. Follow directions on the box of the item you purchase or check before purchase if you have any concerns. Also, ask at Petco they are very helpful with answering specifics. Also, make sure you pick the right lbs weight for your cockapoo they range from small to large for tube drops and follow exact directions for application. I usually put it on before they go to bed so it has time to dry without being all over the house and playing with one another. They are kennel sleepers at night only. Hope this helped with making a decision. Best to you and your cockapoo.

Get a cotton ball and put some liquid dish soap on it and cover the tick with it for a minute or so. When you remove the cotton ball the whole tick should come out with it. The dish soap draws the tick out. Non traumatic and you get the whole tick. Works on humans too.

Question

Revolution

I use revolution for heartworms and it also controls fleas. Even with using this I have still seen a couple of fleas on my dog. Can I also use K9 Advantic II safely on him? He weighs 9lbs and I am using the appropriate dosage. K9 also controls ticks which the revolution does not. So I'm also concerned about that. Please don't answer unless you know for sure. Thanks, Lynn in SC

A friend told me she uses Comfortis for fleas with great success on her bull mastiff. I had already ordered 6 mos of K9 Advantix II. After 3 treatments, he has more fleas than when I first treated him. My dog weighs 70 lbs. I use liquid Ivomec for the heart worm prevention. I used Ivermed on previous dogs and never had a problem with fleas. I hate spending the money for things that DON'T work. How many times did you use the Revolution? I was really looking forward to finding a product that covered everything.

My dog uses Advantix and I've only found 2 ticks total (one on two separate occasions) since he started using it when he was a puppy. Both times the ticks were dead and I just had to remove them. I asked my vet if I was using the wrong kind of tick med and she said that it's very difficult to keep ticks 100% away from your dog (especially when it's an abnormally high tick season) because your dog has to go outside. I think Advantix works well for my dog because I feel better knowing that he's protected.

According to the product information, yes it will. The product information says that it will kill pests in an area which comes into contact with a treated animal, such as bedding. If you were just beginning to use it, I think I would probably launder the bedding anyway just to get off to a good start so to speak, but that's just me. We use this on our girls and we've never had a problem with fleas or ticks. It's great stuff.

I'm not sure which product you are considering, but K9 Advantix II, which I highly recommend, does end up killing all the fleas that surround the dog; in the dog bed; your bed and anywhere else in the house. It takes a couple of days, but I have 4 rescue dogs on property right now, and it's the only thing I would use.

Question

We have a young puppy (age approx 5 months) is this safe for her at her young age? We used it on our Black lab, but she was much older at the time.

We used this on our black Lab-mix, Rosie, but she was well out of her puppy phase when I started applying it. I'm concerned that this may be too toxic for a puppy not even six-months old. Does anyone know if this is safe for puppies? She's not chewing or scratching a lot and I bathe her every 10 days or so and I do find a few fleas.

I just used it on our 5 month old pit/lab mix (he is about 40 lbs). It says it is safe for puppies 7 weeks and up, just be sure you are using the correct dose for their weight. I bought a pack of them and have other larger dogs so I just left a little in the tube. It didn't bother him at all. You should be fine!

YES you do. The flea & tick preventatives are not specifically for heartworm. The topicals cover fleas, ticks, flies, mosquitos. Not any type of worms. You need an actual wormer product for control of worms.

I tried the low end first for a few months to see how it worked. As my dog moved over to the 15lb range, I moved to the higher level. I noted the difference if he scratched more than normal. I think it depends on your dog also. You will see the difference in the first to 2nd month . This product is great, but to much "chemicals" is not a good thing either ....at least for my dog! good luck!

I know it's frustrating to have to purchase two sizes, but studies show that small dogs are the most at risk for toxic poisoning when improperly treated with any body-applied flea treatment, so I wouldn't recommend using the same package. Imagine your needing a medicine, and being given what would be the equivalent of 2X the recommended dosage - which is what would happen if you use the larger package for your smallest dog. We have to buy multiple packages, too, since we do rescues from 25# up to 150#, which is why I take advantage of the Petco PALS program, their sale emails and free shipping. I'd hate to hear you lost your smallest dog to toxic poisoning.

I would not use that dosage on the 8-9 lbs dog. Even though it is close in weight, although rare, using a dosage meant for a heavier dog can have ill effects, such as vomiting and fatigue. If possible you can use a syringe to measure out a smaller dose.

Any of the flea medications that you put on your dog has the potential for overdose, if improperly applied. Small dogs can be most affected by too much at one time, so since you're right at the dividing line, it would be better for you to do the Teal K9 Advantix II, which goes up to 20#, and not risk having it be too much for your small dog. If you find you need to retreat, you can always do so 2 weeks later, which is why getting the discount for multiple treatment package is always good. I just started putting in all the tubes we will need for treating our rescues next spring, and recommend taking advantage of the Petco free shipping and sale emails.
