Just about any freshwater fish. It's more a question of size. The rule of thumb is 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water.

This tank is a perfect place for a betta fish.
Other fish, such as goldfish, won't survive very long in this because while their bodies stop growing, their insides do not. This leads to a very painful death.

Betta fish love lots of room to explore.
It's a common misconception when people say betta fish can live in .5 gallon bowls... Even 1.5 gallons is pushing it. While it's said they live in puddles in Thailand, those "puddles" are actually knee-deep, 550+ gallons-of-water rice paddies. So this 5 gallon is ideal!

All the tank needs is a heater to keep the betta fish at 80'F and an owner who doesn't mind doing at least 50% water changes every four or five days (as they are very sensitive to ammonia, which builds up fast), and he'll thrive.

Betta fish live up to 8 years, so do your researh!

Happy fishkeeping!

This worked really well for me. Water stayed really clean with 2 water frogs and 1 beta fish. I used a lot of live plants so everyone got along really well.

Yes, there is. In the back, behind the filter, there are two small openings. If you take the filter out, you can feed the cord through one of the openings, and place the heater against the back wall. Then you can obviously put he filter back on. This worked for me, so I hope it works for you, too.

I bought a small heater that hangs on with suction cap. It heats the water just fine. Now in July I unplugged it since the water gets warm with summer.

Question

Marineland Eclipse Hex 5 Filtration Question

Hello,

I purchased this item and have had really bad luck with milky colored water. I'm wondering if I'm using the filtration system correctly. Should the filter pad be placed in the filter carbon-grill-side up or down? Any other thoughts about milky water? I only have one beta in the tank and I don't overfeed. I've changed 1/2 of the water once/week over the last three weeks and there's been no change.

The filter goes in carbon grill side down, fuzzy side up. Prefold the little flaps on the sides and make sure it is all the way in the holder. The flap on the long side of the filter should be in the back. I push each corner with my finger to make sure it's down in all the way. Water should flow over it pretty easily.

The milky water could be several things. It could be the filter not being in place correctly. I also change mine weekly. Or you may have build up on the inside of the tank. Get one of those white cleaner pads for acrylic tanks and scrub the inside. Also, vacuuming the rocks in the bottom can help. You could also get some Betta bulbs to grow in the tank (or buy fully grown ones). The Betta fish love them and they help keep the water clean.

You may also want to put an algae eater in with the Betta. I have and algae eater, cory fish, and two aquatic frogs in with my Betta and they do fine. The Betta does chase them from time to time, but them are plenty quick and I think he does it just cause he gets bored.

Finally, there are water clarifiers. A liquid you add to the water. It does work, but I only use it as a last result. It's never hurt anything, but it smells like coppers pennies, very metallic. It'll consolidate what's in the water and clear it away, but it will end up in your filter. So after you get the water clear, take the filter out and just rinse off the gunk and put it back in.

answer 2
Definitely grill side DOWN (blue side up)! I've had issues when changing cartridges -- sometimes the water fills up the cartridge tray area and runs over the top directly onto the bio-wheel (not being filtered, just overflowing out into the wheel area). I remedied this by pulling up the cartridge only at the bio-wheel side a bit to better force the pumped water down through the filter. When the water is entering the wheel from UNDER the filter cartridge, it is being filtered. Hope this helps!

From what im reading it uses fresh water filters so after an hour the salt water would be filtered out and the fish would die because the water would be fresh!

Goldfish get to be very large. They need a minimum of 15-20 gallons per fish. I have 4 goldfish right now that are in a 75 gallon tank and are 4 inches long a piece without even including their tails in that measurement. They are only a little over a year old and will get to be 8-10 inches by the time they are done growing. I have fancy goldfish. A "feeder" goldfish or comet goldfish, can get to be 12-20 inches when properly cared for and given the space. Goldfish do NOT grow to their environment, that is a MYTH. When stuck in a space that is too small for them, they simply stop growing on the outside, but their intestines and organs continue to grow causing them to die much sooner, essentially from exploding. Goldfish who are properly taken care of should live 12-20 years.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't put Goldfish in this tank. Only with Goldfish, use artificial plants as they'll totally destroy real ones. They are dirtier fish so weekly water & filter changes will be critical. Also, just keep an eye on the filter (easy to do). If a bunch of gunk builds up on it, take it out and rinse it in between changes. Maybe a tank cleaner fish to help out. But Goldfish are pretty bomb proof. My folks have theirs in a tank similar to this and it seems to work out fine.

I just change my filter weekly and it seems to help. But you could also probably get an under gravel filter system in the hex shape. I've thought of doing that myself, but haven't shopped around for one.

Yes it comes with a bulb, but we ended up buying another one later as it was recommended to us in store by one of the employees as being better for the type of fish and plants we had in it. Otherwise, everything you need to get started is in the box.

I have read at least three instances where people have been able to keep a nano reef in the Hex 5 fish tank. The whole reason I purchased this tank was to start a nano reef saltwater tank so the short answer is yes, it is safe for saltwater fish. The size and design makes it challenging though.

Yes. Allowing the tank to sit for a few weeks before putting fish in allows natural good bacteria that help to break down fish waste to grow. This avoids "new tank syndrome" where the fish waste can't be broken down and builds up to toxic levels (this is the most common reason fish die right after you bring them home - lots of good info if you google it). The best way to do this is to set up the tank including gravel and plants and add some fish food or a piece of vegetable or fish or something. After a few weeks, test the water (you can get test kits for this or get it tested at the pet store) to make sure the ammonia and nitrite are at 0 and then add the fish. Look up "cycling" for more information
