We measure water density with a hydrometer to estimate the salinity. Sea water is 1.0025, fresh water 1.000. Different fish species have different requirements. Most salt water fish need 1.021 to 1.028. I aim for 1.025 in my tank and just add and stir until it gets there without worrying about the actual ratio. Who knows if every batch of salt is equally potent? I am mixing this in another tank, not the fish tank and replace about 15 to 20% of the water in the fish tank every two weeks. My reef has been happy for ten years.
