If you are interested in controlling weight, try using a measuring cup. I never go by what the bag recommends anyway but fine tune the amount based on results with gradual changes accordingly. I find it helps to divide the portion in half, one for the morning meal and one for evening. This way your dog won't get overly hungry. One dog is on 1/2 cup twice a day and the other on 3/4 cup. They are a slim 45 and 75 pounds, respectively.

I was talking to a few people about this and they said that small breed animals sometimes do best with big breed dog food because the larger kibbles make them slow down and actually CHEW! My small dog was throwing up everything he ate cause he horked it down so fast. Bigger kibbles fixed the problem so I think your two dogs can both eat the same thing!

I feed my CKCS a formula close to this except the meat is chicken instead of salmon. Nature's Recipe grain-free uses sweat potato and pumpkin with chicken as primary ingredient. He loves it and I see no reason why your's couldn't eat the same food as St. Bernard except maybe kibble size.

It should be. The fish (salmon) and the sweet potato provide extra nutrients for a dogs skin. The sweet potato is also just as gentle on your dogs stomach as the lamb; which is what is normally recommended for dogs with sensitive stomachs. We switched my dogs to this food because one of them has a food allergy to chicken and chick by-products. This was what our vet recommended as an alternative to a lamb based product. Neither of my dogs have ear issues, so you may want t check with your vet to be sure but this is a solid food on the other fronts.

Yes, that's actually why I feed it to my dogs because they can't have chicken either. It's sooooo hard to find dog foods that don't contain chicken, chicken meal, chicken by product, chicken oils, etc...... and this one does not.

Yes. NB covers all life stages. This is possible because the average protein needed for a puppy is only a little higher than that of an adult dog. NB has managed to find a "sweet spot" for protein levels.

Question

Can a dog develop food allergies after eating the same food for several years?

For the last couple years my border/spaniel mix has kept a yeast infection in his ears. My vet said it could be food allergies, but he has been on the same food since I adopted him 7 years ago.

Yes.
Ten percent of all allergy cases in dogs are food allergies. Dogs also can suffer from food intolerance, which is different from a food allergy. And those are just numbers that are reported!

Anyway the allergies can flare up from either genetics and predisposition, to changes in environment. Typically, the more common the protein, the more often you see dogs being allergic to it. Most common allergies are from grains, soy, corn, chicken, beef and dairy.

If your dog doesn't have allergies to grains, i would try giving him the reduced calorie natural balance or the fatdog food from natural balance. They both have higher fiber and should help with the poo issues.

If you want to stick with LID, try the Lamb and Brown Rice Formula and if you want grain free, maybe try the venison or bison. My dog is on the venison and sweet potato. He has solid stools and much less than before.

Hi,
Depending on what your vet says for protein level I would go with that. Since NB is an all life stages food, most of the blends fall between 20-24%. (Higher in Synergy and AlphaDog Grain Free).

The lowest protein blend is FatDog or Reduced Calorie Ultra from Natural Balance and it has all the same nutrients, but higher in Fiber and a little lower in protein. It isn't limited ingredient though and contains brown rice as a carbohydrate as opposed to sweet potatoes. If you need grain free the Venison and Sweet Potato have 20%.
