Yes. Bettas prefer larger areas to explore, because, at heart, they are very inquisitive fish. I have a betta in a twenty gallon and the first two days I had him, all he did was explore. A larger tank such as this will provide him a fair amount of room to do so. In addition, the florescent lighting enables you to keep live floating plants, a very good addition for a betta aquarium. You could also keep other fish with him, just be careful about the compatibility.

A Betta will definately be happy in this tank. Although, it's a large tank for just one fish. I have a Betta and several other small fish as well in mine.

Question

Is the lighting good for marine invertebrates?

I have been keeping freshwater fish for 5+ years, but I am thinking, for my first marine tank, about doing a small live rock tank. I was wondering if this system would work--would the flourescent lighting be enough for the little critters that inhabit live rock? Also, would this system work for a button polyp? I know that bigger is oftentimes better, but I haven't the money to do a larger setup.

I have the Eclipse 3 gallon acryllic bowfront tank (9w flourescent) with live rock and mushrooms living successfully for 4 years now, so I would imagine the 5 gallon would be fine. There is one fish, a couple of snails and a very small shrimp. I removed the biowheel filter system and installed a small Prizm skimmer which I use with a Purigen bag (empty to half).
But yes, you will need to carefully monitor conditions (don't forget a nano heater) as things can change very quickly. Get as much live rock as you can in there, and every two weeks do a 25% water changeout, or for even more consistency a 15% weekly. Good luck to you!

I had this same question in mind when thinking about purchasing this kit! I happen to work within a few mile of a PETCO store, so I stopped in. Turns out, this store doesn't carry any of the Marineland kits on the shelves! They had many, but no Marineland. Don't know if this is the case at all stores (could be), but I was a bit disappointed, as I wanted to see it before purchasing. I really liked what I read about this unit (on other sites too) so I decided to purchase it online from petco.com anyway. It was a great choice! And, I recall the price on petco.com was the best I could find (with shipping charges figured in) anyway. Hope this helps!

VERY easy to put a heater in, i put mine in the filter. Provided you have the wires a certain way the lid should close or rather sit level with no issue

A heater is not included, however, there is a notch on the back of the right side that is meant to accomadate a heater. I purchased a heater and added it with no problems.

Yes, the manufacturer Marineland carries it - item no. PR1932B. I couldn't locate it here on petco.com, it looks like they only carry the larger Penguin bio-wheels.

Really any small compact heater should be fine. I just put a topfin heater that heats 2-5 gallons in mine and hid it in the filter
