mom2archie- (or anyone!) how did it work out with flying southwest with the large sherpa? My 18 lb Boston Terrier definitely fits better in the large. She would still be comfortable if the bag is able to smoosh a few inches for the height requirement, so I am wondering if this is possible??

here are the sizes of the underseat area on the plane:

Window Seat: 19"L x 14"W x 8.25"H
Middle Seat: 19"L x 19"W x 8.25"H
Aisle Seat: 19"L x 14"W x 8.25"H

I don't think that the large will fit under the seat. I just flew with my MainCoon cat and he fit nicely under the seat in the small.

Southwest allows a carrier to be 19x19x8.25 in the middle seat, the aisle and window seats are 19x14x8.25. I used the medium sized sherpa bag on Southwest last winter and had no probblems, I just had to smush the top of it down to get it under the seat.

Actually, Southwest DOES allow pets on their flights. You need to check their website for their requirements. They give the sizes that are allowed for pet carriers. All pets on flights must fit underneath the seats and will be considered part of your carry-on luggage. If you're still unsure I would call their customer service

The last time I checked they didn't allow ANY amimals at all. And no airlines allow them on seats, they must go under the seat in front of you!

I have the large Sherpa bag and my 18lb terrier is always allowed on American flights without any hesitation. The flight attendants and check in agents have always been really nice about it. They are the only airline we've found that lets you have a bigger bag than what they list, as long as it can squish.

I have the medium size on wheels, that has privacy flaps and the one without wheels that does not have the flaps.
I now only use the one without flaps and cover my beagle with a lightweight fleece blanket because of weight - the bag without flaps is considerably lighter and my beagle's weight is at the limit of what is permiitted on board!

I don't think this one will work. Maybe the large size, but not the medium. My cat is roughly 14 lbs and he's long. He did fit, but I am sure it was a bit small for him. I was trying to get the longest allowable by the airlines and it was 17 inches. The large I think is 19 inches? That might work. Good luck!

A short piece of rope with a clip on each end to attach one to the dog and one side to the carrier. Works nicely so they can stand or lay down.

It's unlikely. The largest they usually accept is the small, and the bag plus the 18-pound Bichon would be over their 20 pound limit. However, it's possible they won't care or check.

Question

Does anyone know if the medium will fit on Southwest Airlines?

The medium fits best for my dog when she's standing up. When she's laying down though, I figure there's more room at the top to smush it under the seat if needed. Will that be okay?

The medium carrier should fit under the seat, as long as there are no life jackets located under the seat (it was a problem for me but it was on an Air Canada flight). The top will smush a little, it'll take some wrangling, but it can be done. Try to push it as far back as you can since you will have little room for your feet. Good luck!

Probably not in the cabin as carry-on, but check what type of plane you'll be on, and then check on Delta's website for that particular planes' restrictions. The largest dimensions I've seen accepted are for the medium Sherpa. Transatlantic flights ... planes such as 767's ... only accept the small size Sherpa.

Question

Is it necessary that a dog must be able to stand up fully in a soft crate meant for flight purposes?

My dog is just over 12" tall and the height limit for an on board is 13". The Delta requirement limits are 18.5 L 17.5" W and 13" H.

I am able to hold her in the crate on my lap once we are in the air. This is the reason I want a soft crate
