I've tried using a razor, but my preferred method (for creating nipples for feeding kittens) is to heat up a needle with a lighter or candle (while holding the needle with pliers or another tool), then quickly poke the nipple tip with it before it cools down. This sometimes leaves a blackened hole, but it is more reliably "perfectly" sized than any other method I've tried.

If the hole is too large, then kittens can't get enough suction to suckle from it. (Imagine how it feels to try drinking milk through a straw that's much too large. It's not easy to do it without choking.) If it's too small, then it may get clogged easily, or they may nurse for a long time without actually getting much formula. (Imagine trying to drink a milkshake through a small straw).

I try to create a hole that is large enough to flow well with only a little suction, but will (at most) slowly drip without suction.

any time you get any kind of nursing bottle you have to make the opening your self. I use a razor blade, be very careful of your fingers, and make a small "x" on the end of the nipple. I test it filled with water and remember that kitten formula is thicker than water. You may need to adjust the "x" to let the thicker formular through the nipple.

Question

Can this be used for rats?

We are thinking of breeding my new small rat, but what of she rejects them? I would not like the orphans to die. Would this be good for bottle feeding baby rats?
