Questions & Answers for Zoo Med Zoo Med Repti-Therm UTH Under Tank Heaters

Question

Can I use a reptile heating pad for my hamster habitat?

I recently moved from a desert to a high mountain area. Its REALLY cold outside and in our home. My Robo hamster has bedding, but he still seems like he's freezing. Burrowing and sleeping more often. My hamster's habitat is a 10 gallon aquarium, could I use a reptile heating pad if i place it under his tank? Will it melt his plastic accessories? Would it be a fire hazard?

Thank you

You might want to mount them on the side of the tank. It's not powerful enough to melt his accessories, but the glass might get too hot if he burrows under the substrate.

Yes, you can use a reptile heating pad for your hamster. Reptile heat pads are not able to reach at such a high level of heat so that the plastic accessories will melt. It will just make the substrate warm and cozy.

Sure, why not? The heater pad will be on the other side of the glass bottom. Besides the temps we are talking about are lower than most summer time high temps. Don't worry, it will be fine.

As long as you are using the appropriate size under tank heater for your tank, yes. I recommend using paper towels as a substrate for your reptile instead, however. Reptile carpets harbor huge amounts of bacteria as they absorb waste. They are difficult to clean and cannot be spot-cleaned. Paper towels are safe to use with an under tank heater, cheap, and easy to replace.

As long as you're reaching the temperature you need, it doesn't really matter. I actually have 2 1-5 gal size UTHs on a single 1.5 gal tank because the temp wasn't getting high enough at night with just one.

I always used mine underneath without a problem. However, it would be more natural if you mounted it on the side, and the substrate was cooler than the air.

According to the manufacturer, you must use these only on glass aquariums or terrariums. The exception is that you can use the mini sized one on plastic or composite materials.

You shouldn't, as long as a thermometer inside the enclosure reads a good temperature, but it would be a good idea to have one in place in case of unforseen circumstances.

If the fish tank is going to be used to house fish the answer is no. These can't be used with water. Get yourself an aquarium heater rated for a 5 gallon tank. If the tank is going to house something else that doesn't live in water the answer is most likely yes, depending on several factors. But with 2-3" of rocks I wouldn't put it on the bottom since the heat would get trapped under the rock so I would put in on the back or a side.

It's not recommended to place the pad directly under glass that touches water, as it could cause the glass to crack. Try a heater made specifically for use in water. ;3

Medium which is for 30-40
A 2 gallon difference shouldn't be a problem at all.
However, I would keep an eye on the temp, because with my heat pad and lamp going the temp gets just 2-3 degrees too high so I'm getting a lower wattage bulb soon.
But with a new heat source, no matter what it is, you should always keep an eye on the temp when you first get it, especially pads because you can't control the amount of heat they give off. Hope this helps!

The Under Tank Heater is a great way to add heat to a hermit crab habitat. Whether it is required or not depends on what the temperature is in your habitat. Be sure to use a good thermometer and use heating elements to maintain the correct thermal gradient in your tank.
