Questions & Answers for Hill's Science Diet Hill's Science Diet Oral Care Adult Cat Food

Question

Is Science Diet Oral care the same as Prescription diet oral care?

I have 4 cats and the vet recommended the Prescription diet oral care which I buy at the office. But, I just realized that Science Diet Oral care is also avaiable and I would bet it might be a little cheaper. My kitties love the Prescription diet but am thinking about switching since it's made by the same company.
Thanks

I don't know if it is the exact same, but I started with the prescription one and moved to this as it is easier to get (weekends and nights). My cats love it and all three have gotten great checkups since switching to this. (I am also only feeding half the dry food as the oral as they eat it so fast I worry the slow older cat would not get enough)

I can't tell you if they are identical, you'd just need to compare the ingredients labels for that. If it is to reduce the frequency of dental cleanings, my vet suggested the oral care version off the shelf, and it has worked tremendously well. I'd suggest you ask your vet. I didn't realize there were 2 versions.

Same food, and online purchase drops price to under $24 for the big bag. I have 4 adult cats and they go through 4 bags roughly every 6 weeks, if that helps estimating purchase frequency.

I think they are from the same maker but that the prescription diet is probably slightly different. I use the Hills oral care on my cats and it so far has helped keep his teeth clean enough that we don't have to pay for expensive dental treatments.

You bet it's cheaper. I have 3 cats of different stages, ages, and likes, and they all enjoy this product. I'm glad I found it offered through Petco.com. It only comes in a medium size bag, but the cost is good. I'll reorder this again.

The first thing you want to do is check the ingredients. What ingredient is really making the difference between the prescription diet and the generic oral care. You can always get a small bag and try it for about one to two weeks to see if you notice if one is working better than the other. Both kinds are most likely going to be the same flavor. For cats, unfortunately it is trial and error. Another thing, why is your vet recommending a food. If the cats need oral care, you can also give them Greenies which is a cat treat that does the same thing. You can just concentrate on the teeth. There are more components to cats health like skin and coat. There are natural cat foods that are reasonably priced and last longer than the Science Diet would and would have the same effect and give the cats more benefits. To really answer your question, they are really pretty much the same. Just keep an open mind of other options.
